THE EXORCIST CONNECTION

In the 1972 film "The Exorcist" the elder priest character was named Father Merrin (pronounced as Marren).
It is my opinion that his character was based on Monsignor John Marren who ranked high in the St. Louis
Archdiocese during the time of the actual exorcism in the 1940's.

In the book and the film, I believe that the author William Peter Blatty used names that were prominent in
the St. Louis Catholic church during that time. Actor Max von Sydow played Father Merrin in the film.
